• subtle markings rock!--- adding markings that are only *slightly* a different color from the surrounding area can help you get all kinds of cool effects. if, for example, you want a character that has some white parts and some blue parts and some gray parts; create a new image in your art program...

I agree that the snarl definitions are off. Wolf facial expressions from wolfdancer.org . The "longer" the snarl, the more fear/submission involved; animals with "shorter" snarls tend to be much more confident of their position. Both snarls can be defensive or offensive, though, ...

Actually, I tried to enter the missing image URLs manually and everything was turning up with server errors, so it's probably a combination mess up. Thank you very much for changing the images, though, I definitely appreciate it. C:

cedarseed of deviantART has a great tutorial on human emotions and facial expressions that I'm sure you can tweak to suit anthropomorphic characters, too. It is fairly comprehensive.
